TIGER MOUNTAIN

About TIGER MOUNTAIN

TIGER MOUNTAIN is a bookstore and art gallery that opened in February 2025, operated by the content label blkswn publishers Inc. The space is dedicated to what we call “editorial culture.” In addition to new titles published by blkswn publishers Inc., we offer a carefully curated selection of secondhand books.
The name “TIGER MOUNTAIN” is derived from Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy, a Chinese revolutionary modern Peking opera that also inspired the title of a well-known album by Brian Eno.

The defining feature of our bookstore is its shelving system, organized by designers and book designers rather than by authors or genres. The collection comprises approximately 3,800 titles, primarily from the 1960s through the 1990s, including works associated with figures such as Tadanori Yokoo, Kohei Sugiura, Koga Hirano, and Hiroshi Manabe. By placing books by different authors and publishers side by side through the lens of individual designers, visitors can trace distinctive visual approaches and formal characteristics across time. This structure invites an expanded way of seeing books.

An adjoining gallery space surrounds the bookstore. Centered on solo exhibitions by contemporary designers and artists, the program also includes antiques, music, plants, and a range of interdisciplinary events and workshops. Through these activities, TIGER MOUNTAIN serves as a platform for re-examining and reactivating the richness of Japanese publishing culture.
